Actress Marisa Tomei In Person for Q&A
on Fri, Jan 9 at the 7:45pm Show!

Back in the late '80s, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life, trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an aging stripper (Marisa Tomei). Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy back into his world of wrestling. Director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream) presents a powerful portrait of a battered dreamer, who despite himself and the odds stacked against him, lives to be a hero once again in the only place he considers home—inside the ring. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards. A man, like any of us, unable to stop time. Directed by David Fincher (Zodiac, Fight Club, Seven), the dramatic fantasy is a time traveler’s tale of the people and places he bumps into along the way, the loves he loses and finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time. Director Steven Soderbergh's two-part epic about the life of Ernesto "Che" Guevara stars Benicio Del Toro (Best Actor, 2008 Cannes Film Festival) in a tour de force performance as the legendary revolutionary. Part One shows how Che proved to be an indispensible fighter, along with Fidel Castro, in the overthrow of the corrupt dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. As he throws himself into the struggle, Che is embraced by his comrades and the Cuban people. Che rises to prominence in the Cuban Revolution, from doctor to commander to revolutionary hero. Part Two shows Che at the height of his fame and power. Then he disappears, re-emerging incognito in Bolivia, where he organizes a small group of Cuban comrades and Bolivian recruits to start the great Latin American Revolution. The story of the Bolivian campaign is a tale of tenacity, sacrifice, idealism, and of guerrilla warfare that ultimately fails, bringing Che to his death. Writer/director John Patrick Shanley brings his Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play to the screen as a gripping story about the quest for truth, the forces of change and the devastating consequences of blind justice in an age defined by moral conviction. It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), is trying to upend the school's strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep), the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community, and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Muller. But when Sister James (Amy Adams), a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequence. Co-starring Viola Davis. Official Web Site

Favorably compared to his masterpiece The 400 Blows, director/co-writer François Truffaut reached another milestone with the true story of Jean Itard (Truffaut), a visionary doctor who takes on the incredible task of civilizing The Wild Child—a young boy found living alone in the woods of France in the 1700s. At The National Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris, the barely clothed and dirty young boy is admitted. Found in a forest living like an animal, the child is unable to speak, communicate or otherwise function normally. Christened Victor by the hospital staff, his case is taken up by Itard, a patient and loving doctor who is also the lone physician who believes he can transform the scarred boy (Jean-Pierre Cargol, in an astonishing debut) from a savage into a reasoning, civilized being. New 35mm Print! One Week Only!
Starts Friday, January 16 at the Nuart Theatre

Writer/director Jean-Luc Godard's mod film noir, first intended as a reworking of Raymond Chandler's classic The Big Sleep, but essentially based on Donald Westlake's novel The Jugger, is a Pop Art mixture of loving homage to the films of Nicholas Ray and Samuel Fuller and the realism favored by Godard. It is one of the filmmaker's pivotal features, and the last he made with his wife/star Anna Karina (Alphaville, Band of Outsiders, Pierrot le fou), who plays a young woman caught up in a mysterious, convoluted Cold War conspiracy. Due to legal difficulties, Made in U.S.A. never received an 'official' U.S release, but can now be seen in a new 35mm widescreen print (from the original camera negative) with a new translation and new subtitles. Co-starring Jean-Pierre Léaud, László Szabó and Marianne Faithfull as herself, singing "As Tears Go By." Cinematography by the legendary Raoul Coutard. Official Web Site

After meeting at a nightclub in a Mediterranean resort, seven young adults decide to continue partying aboard a luxury yacht in the middle of the ocean. Drugs are distributed and, while they take a dip in the crystal blue water, talk turns sexual. To get a reaction, Bluey (Tom Burke)—a wannabe rude-boy, drug-dealer and DJ—explains the meaning of the phrase "donkey punch" to the shocked group, including an embarrassed Josh (Julian Morris), who'd claimed he'd mastered it. As the ecstasy pills kick in, the girls and guys begin to pair up. But when one of them dies in a horrific freak accident, the others argue about what to do, leading to a ruthless, terrifically suspenseful fight for survival. Also starring Robert Boulter, Sian Breckin, Nichola Burley, Jay Taylor and Jaime Winstone. Directed and co-written by Oliver Blackburn. Original uncut version. Official Web Site
